THE WORK

What commercial staining involves

Commercial spaces often need the work done around business hours and with little mess. We stain items like wood trim, paneling, counters, doors, railings and exterior wood, matching the tone you want.

What is included

  • Wood trim, paneling, doors, railings and fixtures
  • Surface preparation and sanding
  • Color sample so you can approve the tone
  • Clear protective coats where they are needed
  • Masking and clean-up to keep the space usable

How we approach it

We talk through your schedule and the space, then plan the work so your customers and staff are disturbed as little as possible. Tell us if you need it done after hours or in stages and we will work out what is realistic.

Where we stain

  • Reception desks, counters and bar tops
  • Wood paneling, trim and doors
  • Railings, stairs and shelving
  • Exterior wood such as fences, decks and entry features
  • Restaurants, offices, shops and other business spaces

Typical steps

  1. Plan around your business. We talk about hours, access and which areas can be closed off.
  2. Test a sample. Stain looks different on every kind of wood. We test the color on your wood so you can approve it before we start.
  3. Prepare. Old finish is removed or sanded as needed, and the surface is cleaned and dried.
  4. Stain. The stain is applied evenly and wiped or brushed according to the look you want.
  5. Protect. A clear coat is added where the surface needs protection from wear or moisture.
  6. Clean up and walk-through. We clear the area and look over the result with you.

Good to know

Stain versus paint. Stain soaks into the wood and lets the grain show. Paint covers it. If you are not sure which suits your space, ask us.

Wear. High-traffic surfaces like counters and railings need a tougher protective coat than a wall panel. We pick the topcoat to match how the surface is used.

Smell and drying. Some stains and finishes have a noticeable odor while they dry. We plan ventilation and timing with you.
