THE WORK

What drywall repair involves

Repair means patching the damage, taping and smoothing the seams, sanding the area flat, and priming it so the patch does not show through the paint. Larger damage may need a new section of drywall cut in.

What is included

  • Small holes, dents, cracks and nail pops
  • Larger patches and cut-in repairs
  • Taping, mudding and sanding to a smooth surface
  • Priming of repaired areas
  • Matching paint on request, as part of a painting project

How we approach it

We look at the damage and the cause before we repair it. If a crack or stain points to a bigger problem, such as water, we will tell you so you can have it looked at first.

Damage we repair

  • Nail holes, anchors and small dents
  • Doorknob dents and larger holes
  • Cracks along seams and corners
  • Nail pops and tape that is peeling
  • Patches after plumbing or electrical work

Typical steps

  1. Check the cause. We look at why the damage happened, so the repair lasts.
  2. Cut and patch. Loose material is removed. Larger holes get a new piece of drywall cut in and secured.
  3. Tape and mud. Seams are taped and joint compound is spread in thin layers, feathered out past the repair.
  4. Sand. Each layer is sanded smooth once dry, so the patch disappears into the wall.
  5. Match the texture. If the wall has a texture, we match it as closely as we can.
  6. Prime. Primer seals the repair so the paint looks even over it.

Good to know

Drying time. Joint compound needs time to dry between layers, so even a small repair can take more than one visit.

Water damage. A stain or soft spot may mean moisture is still getting in. We will point it out so you can have the source checked before we repair and paint.

Texture matching. Matching an existing texture is hard to do perfectly. We aim for a close match and will tell you honestly how it will look.
