THE WORK
What wood refinishing involves
Refinishing means removing the old, damaged finish, repairing the wood underneath, and applying a new finish. How far we go depends on the condition of the piece and the look you want.
What is included
- Stripping or sanding of the old finish
- Repair of scratches, dents and small damage
- Staining to a color you choose, or a clear finish
- Protective topcoat
- A check of the finished surface in good light
How we approach it
We look at the wood first and tell you honestly what can be saved and what the result will look like. Some damage can be repaired, and some will still show a little. We would rather explain that up front.
What we refinish
- Interior and exterior doors
- Trim, moldings and staircases
- Tables, dressers, chairs and other furniture
- Built-ins, shelving and cabinets
- Wood floors, depending on their condition
Typical steps
- Assess. We check the wood, the old finish and any damage, and tell you what is realistic.
- Strip or sand. The worn or damaged finish is taken off, down to bare wood where it is needed.
- Repair. Scratches, gouges and small cracks are filled or smoothed. Loose joints are noted.
- Color. If you want a new tone, we test stain on the wood first.
- Seal and finish. Sealer and topcoats are applied in thin layers, with light sanding between coats.
- Inspect. We check the surface in good light and fix anything we see.
Good to know
Color changes. Going darker is usually easier than going lighter. Existing color in the wood can also affect how a new stain looks.
Old and antique pieces. If a piece has special value to you, tell us before we start so we can talk about how much to take off.
Cure time. A refinished surface may feel dry quickly but still be soft. Avoid heavy use or putting things on it until we say it is ready.
