THE WORK
What cabinet painting involves
Cabinets are handled and cleaned all the time, so the finish has to bond well. Doors and drawer fronts come off, grease and residue are removed, surfaces are sanded and primed, and the finish is applied in thin, even coats.
What is included
- Doors, drawer fronts and cabinet frames
- Degreasing, sanding and priming
- Fillers for dents and worn spots
- Hinges and hardware removed and put back, or replaced if you supply new ones
- Protection for counters, floors and nearby surfaces
How we approach it
We agree on color and sheen with you first, then plan the work so your kitchen stays as usable as possible. Doors are kept labeled so everything goes back where it came from.
What it is good for
Painting cabinets works well when the boxes are in good shape and you want a new look: a different color, a cleaner white, or a refresh of worn wood. It will not fix damaged or swollen cabinets, and we will tell you if replacement or repair makes more sense.
Typical steps
- Plan. We agree on color, sheen and what happens with hardware.
- Remove and label. Doors, drawer fronts and hinges come off and are labeled so they go back in the right place.
- Clean. Kitchen cabinets collect grease and residue that stops paint from bonding. They get a proper degreasing.
- Sand and fill. Surfaces are scuffed so the primer grips, and dents or worn spots are filled.
- Prime. A bonding primer goes on, which is especially important over glossy or stained wood.
- Paint. Thin, even coats are applied with light sanding between coats for a smooth finish.
- Reinstall. Once the finish has set, doors and hardware go back on and are adjusted.
Good to know
Cure time. Cabinet paint can feel dry well before it is fully hard. Be gentle for the first couple of weeks and avoid scrubbing.
Wood grain. Open-grain wood, such as oak, can show its texture through paint. If you want a smoother look we can talk about grain filling. Ask us what it means for your cabinets.
Your kitchen during the work. We plan around how you use the space and keep the work area as contained as we can.
