THE WORK

What interior painting involves

Interior painting is mostly preparation. Walls get cleaned, holes and dents get filled, rough spots get sanded, and caulk is refreshed where trim meets the wall. The paint goes on after that, so it lays down evenly and lasts.

What is included

  • Walls, ceilings, trim, baseboards and doors
  • Patching of small holes and dents
  • Sanding, caulking and priming where needed
  • Furniture, floors and fixtures covered and protected
  • Clean-up when the work is done

How we approach it

We start by walking the space with you: which rooms, which surfaces, what colors and sheen. We cover and tape before any paint is opened, work room by room, and check the finished walls in good light before we call a room done.

Surfaces we paint

Interior painting covers more than walls. Most projects include a mix of the following:

  • Walls and ceilings, in smooth or textured finishes
  • Baseboards, window and door trim, crown molding and casings
  • Interior doors, closet doors and built-in shelving
  • Accent walls, stairwells and hallways
  • Offices, shops and other workplace interiors

Typical steps

  1. Walk-through. We look at the rooms with you, talk about colors and sheen, and note any repairs.
  2. Protect. Floors, furniture and fixtures are covered. Edges are taped where it helps.
  3. Prepare. Surfaces are cleaned, holes and cracks filled, rough areas sanded, and caulk added at gaps.
  4. Prime where needed. New patches, stains and bare surfaces get primer so the finish coat looks even.
  5. Paint. Ceilings first, then walls, then trim and doors, usually in two coats.
  6. Final check. We look over each room in good light, touch up, remove the tape and clean up.

Good to know

Sheen. Flatter finishes hide wall flaws and suit ceilings and low-traffic rooms. Satin and semi-gloss are easier to wipe clean, which is why they are common on trim, doors, kitchens and bathrooms.

Color. Paint looks different in daylight and lamp light, and next to your floors and furniture. A sample on the wall is worth more than a small paint chip. Tell us if you want help narrowing down options.

Drying and living in the space. Paint is usually dry to the touch within hours but takes longer to fully cure, so go easy on the walls for the first few days. We will tell you what to expect for your project.
